    Excellent stuff. How do we apply the ramp test findings to training and swimming longer distances. Should we try to stick with the sweet spot stroke rate? Does it change for threshold pace or steady swim? I find it gives me optimum speed and efficiency over 50m but still takes a lot more energy than swimming slower with a slower stroke rate which I can maintain for a 1hour swim. Is there a conversion for longer distances or for those who are unfit?

    • @swimsmooth
      @swimsmooth Месяц назад

      Recommendation is to get that sweet spot defined (and the test will likely show two spots per the video) and then work around those numbers between your different distances 👍👍

    I am not an elite swimmer. I am 76 and do roughly 6000m per week. I've be watching video after video month after month to learn how to improve my swimming and find that there's a lot of confusion out there in what the best thing to do to improve things. But after many months of trial and error, I found that no matter what technique I was concentrating on, the one thing I learned to do was to just relax, don't get uptight, and just breathe. After that I found that breathing controls everything and if i don't breathe well, I won't swim well. Even while I am swimming I have to concentrate of my breathing....Awesome insight from you and thanks so much!

      I would say that you either a) didn't take enough rest between the 400 and 200, or your pacing on the 400 was "off" and fatigued you too much to crack out a good 200. Hope that makes sense? Some extreme diesel engines can be very close to the EXACT same, but it the calculation hasn't worked it must be because your 200 is slightly slower than the 400. Theoretically this can't happen as you must have swum 200 within the 400 quicker than your 200 TT

    I always thought that the catch part of the pull was the wrist flex you do before you start your pull..... As for how far back you pull, that seems to vary on whether you are sprinting or doing distance. With the 50 meter sprint, I am thinking that stroke rate is the most important part, and how far back you pull is secondary. With distances, it is the opposite where you want maximum pull length, and a slower stroke rate. I do get better endorphin rushes from sprints than I do from distances. Maybe that is because the distances take longer and it isn't as much of a peak and drop off...

I started swimming last Aug (Aged 64) with breaststroke (If you could call it that). I then began freestyle this February after watching your videos. From the outset, I managed to get my breathing right (Although I still have sinky legs - but getting better) and now swim 400m in 9:00 mins. Great video - one question I have is as these tempo trainers are not race legal in triathlons how can I stick to my sweetspot tempo during a race? I always seem to just go back to my natural rhythm (which is as slow as a tortoise!). Is it just a case of practising at the right tempo and hoping it is ingrained enough for race day? If so how much should I train at this particular tempo in your view? Thanks!

    I think the video titled "Rotate Your Hips Before Applying Power" by Effortless Swimming could also explain the concept behind criss cross maneuver. Basically, as same side arm initiates the pull, the same side leg follows immediately with a kick, and at the same time, the opposite arm also enters the water; hence the criss cross.

  • @user-tq8ru8ki7w
    @user-tq8ru8ki7w 4 месяца назад

    Surely he'd be better off getting up to 65 stroke rate? Although he thinks he's "spinning his wheels" he's going 2s faster than 56 for the same perceived effort? That's 4s per 100m!

    • @Kick_Pull_Swim
      @Kick_Pull_Swim 4 месяца назад

      I would say not to as he's feeling like he is moving his arms too quick (uncomfortable), and it would probably make him tired, sooner. He could probably go at 80 revs, then he'd get tired even sooner. So, to me the sweet spot is 58. The swimmer has to be comfortable. Like Paul said, set the TT at 58 and give that a go over the longer swims. He may well progress >60 later......

    • @swimsmooth
      @swimsmooth 4 месяца назад

      It's a good observation - thanks for chipping in! The advantage I had with Scott was that he also swims in the squad. Earlier in the video I talk about the ramp test being a "sign post" with scope for experimenting further beyond this. He elected for 58 following this test for his CSS based intervals. We did try the quicker rates as well, however, in consistent practice over different distances, 56-58 proved correct for this veritable mountain of a man!

    • @swimsmooth
      @swimsmooth 4 месяца назад

  • @joemoya9743
    @joemoya9743 4 месяца назад

    Nicely explained. I did something similar about a decade ago and found it an excellent way to help determine an optimal stroke count that I later found to be dependent on my training distance goal. I also experimented and did an inverted version where I start with optimal cadence plus 10-12 stokes and reduce the cadence in increments BUT also shift from front quadrant dominate stroke at higher cadences to glide/kick dominate stroke in the lower cadence range. What I found out is that higher stokes tends to be universally advantages regardless of distance training BUT at an aerobic cost that can be tempered with lower stroke rate but more distance per stroke. This has accomplished the ability to adapt my stroke rate for the conditions and distance vs. my fitness level at the time. Plus, it helps establish a training GOAL cadence rate that incorporates longer distances and short distances while also incorporating both cadence and distance per stroke.
